Art of Self-Discipline

Common characteristic of successful people : Self-discipline.

Our success and happiness is determined by the amount of self-discipline we have.

No substitute of self-discipline. Intelligence, knowledge and skills are not enough.

SET A GOAL

Harvard MBA studies - 3% who had written goals earned on average 10 times as much as the other 97% of the class combined.
Write down your goals by using the SMART (specific, measureable, achieable, relevant and time-bound).

Staying focus on what you are doing.

Staying focus is about self-control from distractions and putting complete attention on what you are doing.

The secret of success lies in the code word, FOCUS (Focus One Course Until Successful).

Focusing on one thing intently with intensity can fire up one's performance and achievement.

VISUALISE SUCCESS

Holding a mental picture of what success would be like and imagining how it would feel is a powerful mental discipline to motivate oneself to achieve the goal one has set.

CELEBRATE SUCCESS

Celebrating the 'small success' in the journey of achievement is a good way of reinforcing one's motivation to continue to accomplish 'bigger successes' to come.

Success is indeed a journey and not a destination.

DEVELOP A PASSION

American dancer, Martha Graham said it well: "Great dancers are not great because of their technique; they are great because of their passion".

What are the qualities that make a good leader?

  • has a high virtue and a noble character
  • as time passed amid growth and progress, good qualities diminished while egocentrism prevailed
  • hatred and revenge are harmful
  • noble character is all-encompassing, portrayed by noble words and behaviour
  • one has to articulate visions, mission and values

Why is it important to capture methane gas?

Biogas is a gaseous fuel high in calorific value (CV), 20MJ/m3. Its energy potential is huge although not as good as natural gas (38MJ/m3) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG, (100MJ/m3). The energy released makes biogas perfect for use as a fuel in a gas engine to convert the energy in the gas into electricity and heat.

Methane in the biogas emitted into atmosphere is a greenhouse gas (GHG) and is 25 times more potent than CO2 in its global warming potential (IPCC 2007). Methane together with CO2, water vapour and nitrogen oxides contribute towards climate change by containing the heat within the globe's atmosphere, causing temperature to rise and forming a blanket to prevent heat radiation from the earth at night. As a result, biogas causes detrimental effects to the environment.

With biogas capture, the GHG can greatly be reduced and the biogas can be used as renewable energy to replace fossil fuel for steam or electricity generation. The excess electricity generated can also be supplied to the national grid through a proper mechanism allowed by the government.

Konsep Amalan 5S Ditempat Kerja

  5. SENTIASA AMAL - Melatih pekerja mematuhi peraturan pembersihan dengan baik supaya menjadi budaya kerja.

Why pursue sustainability?

  • Increasing demand of Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO)
  • Bursa Malaysia requiring Public Listed Companies to disclose a sustainability statement on Economic, Environment and Social
  • MSPO Certification has been made mandatory by 2019

What is Sustainability?

"Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs"

- Brundland Commission, 1987

3 main segments ;
  1. Economic Viability - office management, profitability, R&D
  2. Environment - environmental management, pollution prevention
  3. Social - standard of living, human rights

3-MCPD ESTERS

The following are summary of notes on the above matter ;

  • the presence of 3-MCPD esters in all refined vegetable oils and fats
  • palm oil does not contain the highest level of 3-MCPD esters in comparison with other oils as reported by some researchers
  • health risk posed by MCPD esters is also ambiguous
  • no toxicological data on 3-MCPD esters are available
  • the cause of formation of 3-MCPD esters are deodorising temperature in refining process, pH and chloride content (nature of the chloride ion)
  • limit of detection (LOD) is 0.25 miligram/kg, while limit of quantification (LOQ) is 0.5 miligram/kg
  • the possible factors that contribute to the formation of 3-MCPD esters besides the deodorisation are - acidity (dosage of phosphoric acid), type of bleaching earth (natural versus acid activated), chloride levels
The level of 3-MCPD esters in the processed palm oil can be reduced if the following measures are taken ;

  • the ffb should be harvested and sterilised immediately
  • natural clay and acid-activated clay with neutral or close to neutral pH are recommended during refining
  • optimisation of phosphoric acid dosage during degumming
  • reduction of acidity prior to bleaching
  • chemical refining is a possible way to reduce the formation of 3-MCPD esters
  • ensuring good quality CPO

Handling Difficult People

Effective strategy called the T.O.T.A.L. approach in handling difficult people.
The T.O.T.A.L approach stands for Tolerate, Overlook, Trivialise, Accept and Let Go.

TOLERATE

To get along with others we need to tolerate differences, diversities and sometimes "difficult people".

The best way to rid an enemy is by making a friend out of him.

OVERLOOK

"a wise person overlooks an insult, but a fool immediately gets annoyed".

A good way to hold the peace is to ignore insults by others.

A person who shows patience and calm in facing an insult is superior compared with the wildly uncontrolled insulter who is reduced to an uncivilised barbarian.

Eleanor Roosevelt said it best : "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent".

TRIVIALISE

The key is to keep calm and focus on the things that matter and be not affected by the trivialities trumped up by them.

Trivialise the problem ; don't sweat the small stuff but simply find the solution to the problem, and move forward.

ACCEPT

Theologian Reinhold Niebuhr put it soundly in his prayer, "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference".

LET GO

One great hindrance to good relationship with others is the inability of letting go of untoward incidents that had happened in the past.

Letting go, requires forgiveness.

We move on to make amends and patch up with people.

When one learns to handle difficult people, one achieves an inner peace which will make one happier and healthier.

  3. The third factor is the Portfolio Turnover Ratio (PTR)
  4. The fourth factor is known as the Fund's Volatility Factor (FVF)
