It was golfer Fred Couples who earned the nickname Boom Boom for his explosive tee shots. But golfers who use titanium clubs beware : your booming shots could be bad for your hearing. A British study reported on the case of a 55-year-old man who developed tinnitus and hearing loss after playing golf three times a week for 18 months. The culprit turned out to be his thin-faced titanium driver-a popular model because of the kick it imparts to balls. The safe limit for an "impulse noise" like a gunshot or golf drive is 110 decibels. The titanium club produced 128 decibels. The investigators say it's too early to throw away your titanium clubs, since there have been no larger studies so far. One precaution would be simply to wear earplugs, a good way to protect golfers from an even more harrowing sound that often follows a driver a splash.
