The survey classified the mills based on the total oil losses from five sampling points (empty fruit bunches, steriliser condensate, sludge water from separator, press cake fibre and percentage of unstripped bunches) which are ;

• Poor Performing Mills 24%  :   > 1.8% oil loss
• Average Performing Mills 58%  :   1.3% - 1.8% oil loss
• Good Performing Mills 18%  :   < 1.3% oil loss

Key Issues of Low OER

The NKEA ( Malaysian - National Key Economic Area) Laboratory had identified the key issues affecting the low OER performance. They are as follows ;

• Inconsistent qualities of fresh fruit bunches are delivered to palm oil mills.
• Inefficient mills with relatively high oil losses to fresh fruit bunches exceeding 1.8%.

Six strategies have been identified to address the key issues ;

1. Improve the quality of FFB delivered to the mill with assistance from MPOB enforcement officers.
2. Enforce proper grading of FFB consignments, based on guidelines published by MPOB.
3. Millers and FFB traders shall employ competent graders, certified by MPOB.
4. FFB price shall be based on the quality of FFB received.
5. Improve the milling efficiency.
6. Enforce Good Milling Practice (GMP) in mills by mandating mill certification schemes like CoP or other similar standards.

It has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels of dioxin in breast cancer tissue.. Sheryl Crow's oncologist told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. The heat reacts with the chemicals in the plastic of the bottle which releases dioxin into the water. Dioxin is a toxin increasingly found in breast cancer tissue. So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car. Pass this on to all the women in your life. This information is the kind we need to know that just might save us! Use a stainless steel canteen or a glass bottle instead of plastic! LET EVERYONE WHO HAS A WIFE / /DAUGHTER KNOW PLEASE! (This was new to me ) This information is also being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center ... No plastic containers in microwaves. No plastic water bottles in freezers. No plastic wrap in microwaves. Dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to cells in our bodies. Don't freeze plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently the Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating food in the microwave using plastic containers...... This especially applies to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastic releases dioxininto the food. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Pyrex or ceramiccontainers for heating food... You get the same result, but without the dioxin.. So, such things as TV dinners, instant soups, etc., should be removed from their containers and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's safer to use tempered glass, such as Pyrex, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the styrene foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.... Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Cling film, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food.. Cover food with a paper towel instead. Knowing Data :
Bulk density of sterilized ffb, b = 0.32 tonne/m3
Thresher rpm = 22
Thresher diameter = 2.6 m
Loading factor, k = 0.05
Forward travel of bunches = 0.5 m

Calculation :

Rate of travel of bunches,
V = 22 x 0.5 m/min = 660 m/hr

Cross sectional area of the material in the thresher,
a = (22/7 x 2.6 x 2.6 / 4) x 0.05 = 0.2656 m3

Thresher capacity, T = a x b x V tonnes / hour
                                  = 0.2656 x 0.32 x 660
                                  = 56 tonnes / hour

Properties of Crude Palm Oil (Press Liquor) and Water Dilution at Press Station

Undiluted Crude oil from screw press :
i)    Oil     - 55%
ii)   Water - 35%
iii)  Solid - 10%

Diluted Crude oil from screw press (41% water addition) :
i)   Oil     - 39%
ii)  Water - 54%
iii) Solid  - 7%

Press liquor = 35% to FFB
100 tonnes of FFB will produce 35 tonnes of Press liquor

Water Dilution

Water dilution to press liquor is 41%
41% of 35 tonnes press liquor is 14.35 tonnes of water
(41 x 35 / 100)

By adding 41% hot water (dilution water) to crude oil from press :

Total sample now become 141% (addition of water to sample is 100 + 41 = 141%)
41 + 35 = 76% (35% water in undiluted press liquor)
76/141 x 100 = 53.9% water
55/141 x 100 = 39.0% oil (55% oil in undiluted liquor)
10/141 x 100 = 7.09% solid (10% solid in undiluted liquor)

Refer to the properties of diluted crude oil from press

The correct water dilution to press liquor should be 41%
